About Reading West
The constituency comprises the western part of the Borough of Reading (specifically the wards of Battle, Kentwood, Minster, Norcot, Southcote, Tilehurst and Whitley) together with the parishes of Holybrook, Pangbourne, Purley-on-Thames, Tidmarsh with Sulham, Theale and Tilehurst in West Berkshire District. It is bounded by the constituencies of Newbury, Henley, Reading East, and Wokingham.
Reading has been independently judged to be one the best places at withstanding the effects of the recession and is well placed to come out of the recession well.
Naz said “the most important policy area that Labour needs to get right bith locally and nationally is the economy. Independent reports have shown that Reading is coping well. We need to make sure we keep putting in both local and national investment to keep Reading going. Reading is working. We can’t let the Tories wreck it.”
There is a big disparity in the level of services in Labour run Reading Council and West Berkshire Council. Naz Sarkar has launched a massive campaign to increase care for the elderly in West Berkshire where care is significantly different from the care in Reading.
Naz Sarkar said ”This is a postcode lottery. It shouldn’t be that just because you live in West Berkshire you get much worse care than if you live in Reading.”
At the moment Tory West Berkshire Council has changed it’s policy to say being with in the critical category doesn’t automatically entitle you to care. Reading Council currently helps 2,800 people who if they lived in West Berkshire wouldn’t be entitled to help.
